Living in Bream Bay

Bream Bay spreads from the mouth of Whangarei Harbour (Bream Head) to the southernmost point of Waipu Cove (Bream Tail). The area also inhabits 3 native reserve islands, located just off the coast of Bream Bay: the Hen and Chickens Islands and Sail Rock Island.

The Beach

Throughout the whole of Northland you are never more than 40 kilmetres from the coast, so the hard decision is where to launch the boat or what beach to spend the day at.  Enjoy the deserted sands of Uretiti or the popular surf beaches of Waipu Cove and Ruakaka.

The Estuary’s

For all the nature-lovers, Waipu and Ruakaka estuary’s are well known bird sanctuaries. Hire kayaks and see the abundance of bird life close up. Waipu estuary is famous for their fairy terns.

The History

Waipu settlement was established by Norman McLeod and his followers, they set sail from Scotland, via Nova Scotia and Melbourne to Waipu. At the Waipu Museum, you can learn about the unique migration of Scottish Highlanders, over 150 years ago. The area is internationally known for the Highland Games, which are held annually on New Year’s Day.

Golf Courses

Bream Bay has two golf courses and both are regarded as the best greens in New Zealand.  Waipu Golf Club is set on the waters edge of Bream Bay with spectacular ocean views and Mangawhai Golf Course has been ranked 7th among  the top courses in New Zealand by a panel of NZPGA Professionals, Golf Travel operators and club golfers.

Sea & Islands

The Pacific Ocean provides a play ground of boating, fishing, dolphin watching and islands to explore. Surf cast off the pristine beach of Uretiti (clothes optional) or head to the new Marsden Cove marina at One Tree Point, hop on your boat and head over to the Hen and Chicken Islands, home of tuatara and tieke (saddleback).

Horse Races

Ruakaka Racecourse is where the “turf meets the surf”.  Whangarei Racing Club races at Ruakaka racecourse has a friendly, fun, family atmosphere, which makes for an enjoyable afternoon of racing.
